RAFAF was created in 2012 in cooperation with several galleries –participants of the most important fair in the world, TEFAF Art Fair Maastricht, in order to showcase selected works by classic masters alongside modern artworks. Previous RAFAF exhibitions in Moscow exhibited masterpieces by Breughel, Cranach, Rubens, Snyders, Hals, Rembrandt, Modigliani, Picasso, Botero, Rodin, Bugatti, and other top artists in arts history. Unfortunately, the crisis has cut down the number of European and American galleries that used to bring classical and modern artworks to Russia.

RAFAF mission is to create a networking environment for artists, art historians, collectors, critics, dealers, media representatives and to familiarize the spectators with artworks from all over the world including Russia in context of the global art world.

As a result, many world-class masterpieces (Rembrandt, Roden, Picasso, Goya, Cassignolles, Snyders) found a new home in Russian collections and museums. Thus, Alisher Usmanov acquired the painting “St. Mark” by Franz Hals stolen from Russia and presented it to the Pushkin Museum (Moscow). At the ceremony of transferring the painting to the museum President of the museum ,Irina Antonova, called the gift as the most important acquisition of the museum since 1918.

The painting by the famous Dutch artist Frans Hals was stolen in the 19th century and exported from Russia. It was shown at the Johnny Van Haften Gallery at the first RAFAF exhibition in Moscow. After the exhibition, it was acquired by the famous philanthropist Alisher Usmanov and donated to the Pushkin Museum. This is the only work of the Dutch master in Moscow museums.

Art selection

Only a few selected by the curator world galleries and only with works of art selected by the curator can enter the RAFAF exhibition. Maas Galleries (London), Carlo van Osterhut (The Hague), Helmut Koller (New York) are so satisfied with the results of the exhibitions and sales that they participated in all four RAFAF exhibitions since 2012, despite the high cost of participation and delivery of works art in the customs status of Cornet Ata to Russia.

RAFAF 2019 in Sochi was the first ever exhibition of this level of importance in the region. Its main goal is to revive the city’s cultural space by bringing in the exhibition-related activity.
